The summer of 2020 saw the inauguration of the Seestadt subway station’s forecourt designed by the artist duo Krüger & Pardeller. The design element Zukunft einer Vision (Future of a Vision) conveys the historical signature of the former airport with its new design as a urban development zone and residential area in northeastern Vienna.

The opening of this prominently situated square is accompanied with the publication of this academic-essayistic artist’s book, which informs readers of the design’s aesthetic propositions and ponders its real and symbolic topography in essays on urbanism, culture, and art. Richly illustrated with historical photographs, this documentation of the history of the Aspern airfield chronicles the fascination of the area that continues to this day.

Doris Krüger, b. in Vienna, and Walter Pardeller, b. in Bolzano, live and work in Vienna. They have been collaborating since 2005. Krüger & Pardeller explore how social interaction shapes physical space and, vice versa, how spatial concepts and objects influence social constellations. They understand their installations as platforms where subjective and social ideas of form and aesthetics and, consequently, the concomitant models of how we live together can be negotiated.
