The duo Payer Gabriel approaches still life in a graphic-pictorial as well as theoretical-historical manner. Their flower paintings are virtuoso works, but not traditionally naturalistic; rather, they are heteroclite, shifted, and rearranged in their elements. The inventory thus designated is a form of exploration intended to illustrate the underlying rules of construction. These structured paintings and drawings, which exhibit their artificiality, are accompanied by an alphabetically ordered text section that cites and comments on related topics in botany and colonial history as well as the art and genre history of still life.
Payer Gabriel have hand-marbled each cover of the 350 copies in their edition in three alternative base colors: gray, purple, or yellow. Each book is therefore unique.
